Translated into English by Fortunato Prandi. This is the first English edition of this successful memoir written by Alexander Andryane on his misfortunate time being imprisoned by the Austrians. Andryane was a French politician of the nineteenth century. As he was a Carbonari sympathiser he spent several years in Spielberg, Austria. He was sentenced to death in 1824 alongside Confalonieri but was reduced by the Austrian Emperor to life imprisonment at the Spielberg fortress. He was eventually released and penned these memoirs of his time. An interesting insight into this portion of political history.
