The study of history, which is derived from the Greek term ἱστορία, meaning "inquiry; knowledge acquired by investigation", is the investigation of past events.

Before the invention of writing systems, these events were known as prehistory.

History is the recollection, discovery, collection, organisation, presentation, and interpretation of the past. Historians use sources such as written documents, oral accounts, art, and material artefacts to gain knowledge about the past.

They also analyse the causes and effects of different events to explain why they happened. Historians often discuss the purpose of history and its relevance to current events.

Thomas Hardy's works became public domain in December 1978, fifty years after his death, by the Berne Convention.

However, the Copyrights, Designs and Patents Act of 1988 extended the period of copyright expiration to seventy years, meaning that Hardy's writings remain out of copyright.

Hardy is remembered as an English novelist and poet in the tradition of Victorian realism, drawing inspiration from Romanticism and the poetry of William Wordsworth.

He was sharply critical of many aspects of Victorian society, particularly the marginalisation of rural people in Britain, such as those from the South West of England where he was born.
