After the death of her husband Tom, Helen Dexter is contemplating her future as the now-sole proprietor of the Seaview Hotel.

There’s an offer from a hotel chain developer to consider, but also a booking from a group of twelve Elvis impersonators, a singing troupe called Twelvis. Tom loved Elvis and for Helen this is a sign that she should stay.

But the series of mysterious events which follow, suggests that the developer is not going to give up easily. Then, shortly after Twelvis arrive, one of the group disappears. His body is found floating in a lake, with his blue suede shoes missing. Could the two be connected?

With the reputation of the Seaview on the line, Helen isn’t going to wait for the murderer to strike again. With her trusty greyhound Suki by her side, she decides to find out more about her guests and who wanted to make sure this Elvis never sang again.

Review: Having read and thoroughly lost myself in the world of Young’s historical romances I was not sure what to expect from a ‘cosy’ and contemporary crime set in Scarborough. The way in which she evoked so passionately and ‘authentically’ her childhood village of Ryhope in previous novels helped create a wonderfully real yet distant sense of place and time so how would she adjust to a novel set in the now and not here? Brilliantly that’s how. Having visited Scarborough over the last 6 or 7 years I can honestly say that she evokes a real sense of place, pulling the reader into the charms of the (first) Victorian town to a point where the place itself becomes a character. You can really feel being walked through the streets, beaches and parks of this wonderful town. It’s a wonderful travelogue but so much more. There’s mystery and a real sense of fun. Crime with a twinkle in the eye. Cosy but not obvious! A great cast of likeable (and despicable characters), a simple but effective premise and a genuine sense that the author loves and believes in the characters and world she creates. I want to book into the Seaview. I want to try one of those famous breakfasts and I want to see Twelvis live. A cracking read (and I mean that in it’s most complimentary form) and a place I want to return to on fiction and in fact (but perhaps with a little less intrigue when I go to Scarborough for real). If you’ve been to S’boro you’ll recognise it immediately in Young’s description – if you’ve never been you’ll want to go! Crazy golf and fish suppers anyone?
