The Secret History of the Scarborough Grand: Sex, Scandal and Secret Stories from one of Britain’s Best Seaside Hotels by Lorna Spacey is an indie publication (c. 2020) that uncovers the scandalous, untold, and fascinating tales of the iconic Grand Hotel in Scarborough. 

The book is a 20- to 50-page deep dive into the lives and secrets of the guests and staff who walked the halls of the famous Victorian building. Highlights include: 

• Scandal and Secrecy: True tales and whispered rumors from one of the coast’s most beloved (and infamous) hotels.
• Victorian Roots: The context of its opening in 1867, when it was Europe’s largest purpose-built hotel and constructed in a ‘V’ shape to honor Queen Victoria. 

From the 19th century when the hotel first opened to now it has been home to fascinating characters with such stories to tell. There is a connection to the Charge of the Light Brigade and the Tay Bridge disaster, as well as a pioneer of electric light and a Hollywood star. This hotel has been one of the most interesting that I have researched, producing story after story of adventure and heroism.
