The RAF’s rugged twin-rotor Chinook support helicopter has been involved in most of the UK’s military operations stretching back to the Falklands Conflict, Northern Ireland and in both Gulf Wars, to peacekeeping in Bosnia, operations in Kosovo, the evacuation of Sierra Leone, and most recently its high-profile missions in Afghanistan. Author Chris McNab has been given full access by the RAF to its Chinook helicopters and crews to give an unprecedented insight into their operation and maintenance, fully illustrated with a stunning selection of photographs and technical drawings.

Reviews

I found this book by accident while searching for other information but as I spent 16 years on Chinooks, I had to have it. And what a great buy it was, I haven’t finished reading it as yet but am thoroughly enjoying it, there’s even interviews with a number of people I knew in my time on the fleet. Whoever it was at Haynes that had the brilliant idea of branching their manuals away from cars and into aircraft etc. deserves a massive bonus. I can thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the Chinook.

I’ve been buying a lot of these Haynes “Owner’s Workshop Manual” recently. They are an excellent reference item when building model kits and easy to read as a standalone book. They follow a standard format- history, variants, Use and Maintenance. The books are usually written by former user/experts and are always very informative. Also, the quality of photos and illustrations are second to none, often showing the unseen/hard to get to areas. Haynes are onto a winner with these, as they are an excellent addition to a reference library.
