Essential reading and reference for all car-booters!

This book takes 20 of the most commonly-found items of junk furniture – such as tables, chairs, chests of drawers and cabinets – and shows how they may be transformed into furniture to be proud of. It introduces a wide range of techniques and materials via step-by-step instructions and photography; this, coupled with suggestions for other applications of the techniques, provides the reader with a solid base of ideas for experimentation. Popular decorative techniques such as decoupage, stenciling, gilding, punched tin, mosaic and paint effects are employed on glass, metal and wood.

Reviews:

  • Very good book about improving anything around the house with different approaches from painting to stenciling, mosaic and guilding ideas. It explains everything from how to prep a surface to how to use guilding techniques. Now the projects are all awesome in their execution, but some are a bit ugly but do not let this put you off. To me the methods of improving old things is why I bought it, and why I’m very happy with this book.

  • Being a novice, I found the illustration very easy to understand. I am confident that I will be able to reproduce some very lovely old furniture to new without any problems.

  • This is a great book to have on hand, even if you aren’t looking to repurpose anything specific, it makes for a very useful reference tool. I know that these days there are a lot of websites that provide similar ideas, but you need to know exactly what you are looking to do: this book is great to have on hand because it can give you insights on how to turn some of your own “junk” into something useful. It’s also great to flip through before going to your local goodwill, ‘car boot’, or flea market. The fact that it is hardcover is a bonus, making it a good coffee table book as well.
