The Halifax became the second of the new generation of four-engine heavy bombers to enter service with RAF Bomber Command in the Second World War. It flew its first offensive operation in March 1941 and by 1944 it had become the exclusive equipment for Bomber Command’s 4 Group and 6 (Canadian) Group, as well as being used in smaller numbers by 100 (Bomber Support) Group. The Halifax flew on virtually all the main raids of the night offensive between 1942 and 1945 and the last occasion when Bomber Command Halifaxes operated in strength against the enemy was on 25 April 1945.

Reviews

I love WW2 bombers and aeroplanes; I have already got the author’s Haynes manual on the Shorts Stirling so I knew this would be a good read. It is! Lots of pictures and facts right from the design, prototyping and flying through to the modifications during and after the war. Accounts of the aeroplanes salvaged from underwater. Interesting facts I had not read elsewhere. Unlike some aircraft books, this isn’t padded-out with boring columns of endless figures and mission numbers etc. Every page turn is another delight.

Excellent, well researched and detailed discussion of the Halifax which is one of the maligned and forgotten bombers of WWII. The texts is profusely illustrated with photos including many inside photos of the magnificent restoration in the Trenton, Ontario aviation museum. This volume is one of the best in the Owner’s Workshop Manual series.

Jonathan Falconer is the author of more than 30 books on aspects of aviation and military history, including Stirling at War,” “Stirling Wings” and “Stirling in Combat,” and co-author (with Brian Rivas) of the Haynes de Havilland Mosquito Manual.” He lives in Wiltshire.
