It is early September 1942 and the German commander of the Sixth Army, General Paulus, assisted by the Fourth Panzer Army, is poised to advance on the Russian city of Stalingrad. His primary mission was to take the city, crushing this crucial centre of communication and manufacturing, and to secure the valuable oil fields in the Caucasus. What happens next is well known to any student of modern history: a brutal war of attrition, characterised by fierce hand-to-hand combat, that lasted for nearly two years, and the eventual victory by a resolute Soviet Red Army. A ravaged German Army was pushed into full retreat. This was the first crucial defeat of Hitler s territorial ambitions in Europe and a marked a critical turning point in the Second World War. But the outcome could have been very different, as Peter Tsouras demonstrates in this thought-provoking and highly readable alternate history of the fateful battle. By introducing minor but realistic adjustments, he presents a scenario in which the course of the battle runs quite differently which in turn sets in motion new and unexpected possibilities for the outcome of the entire war. Cleverly conceived and expertly executed, this is alternate history at its best.
Born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. after army service in the US and Germany PETER G. TSOURAS retired from the US Army Reserve in 1994 in the rank of lieutenant colonel. After his army service Peter worked for the U.S. Army Intelligence and Threat Analysis Center (now the National Ground Intelligence Center) and the Defense Intelligence Agency. A highly respected military historian, he has also written critically acclaimed alternate histories on D-Day and Gettysburg.
Reviews
I was hugely impressed with this alternative history, I had to keep reminding myself that this was fiction and not a real history. Very cleverly written.
I have read many alternative history novels and stories before, and this really has to be one of the best ones. I have also read many of the author’s previous books before and had mixed feelings about some of them but this is easily the best book he has written.
An interesting plot begins with the Heydrich surviving his Prague posting and working closely with German Intelligence, a new strategy with the German Navy completely destroying and stopping Allied Arctic Convoys supplying the USSR, Turkey coming in to the war on the German side, Manstein taking over strategy on the Stalingrad front with Paulus being transferred back to Germany all combine in to a plot where the Germans win the battle of Stalingrad and change the whole course of the war!
I won’t say much more and leave you to discover the details of how the above happens and to discover the interesting conclusions but it really is a great read
Brilliant “what-if” book written in a style reminiscent of Tom Clancy’s Red Storm Rising with a view of the war on the Eastern Front from the perspective of real and interesting historical characters e.g. Ulrich Rudel (great autobiography by the way)
I was totally gripped by this booked and literally finished it in two sittings (very unusual for me).
Author clearly has an excellent knowledge of the subject and nicely includes the known personalities of those involved like Manstein and Paulus.
Very believable account and nicely written.
If I have any negatives it would be that it’s a little too tidily sewn up at the end (although the pedant in me baulks at Messerschmitt Bf109’s being called Me109’s…grrrr)
As a student of WW2 military Ostfront history I enjoyed it immensely.
Must get some more of this guy’s books!
1942 really was the tipping point of the war and fro all the vast size and resources of the Soviet Union the German operation in the Caucasus really threatened the survival of the Soviet state.
I hope the author produces more.
