A well presented book

Anatole was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1921. A very pretty, uncommon edition, original black cloth with bright gilt angels and title on the front board, and bright title on the unfaded spine. A hint of wear at the corners and spine ends, but a clean, tight, beautiful copy. Inside, very clean and tight. No prior owner marks. This is the first illustrated edition by the Bodley Head. Zhenya Gay (illustrator). The first illustrated edition of Anatole France’s work “The Crime of Sylvestre Bonnard”. In the publisher’s original cloth binding, with gilt detail to the spine and front board. Translated from the original French into English by Lafcadio Hearn. The first novel by the French author Anatole France. Having before been regarded primarily as a poet this work of prose established France as an important and versatile author. This work charts the story of Sylvestre Bonnard, and his friendship with the young girl, Jeanne.
