Two on a Tower: A RomanceĀ (1882) is a novel by English authorĀ Thomas Hardy, classified by him as a romance and fantasy and now regarded as one of his minor works. The book is one of Hardy’sĀ WessexĀ novels, set in a parallel version of lateĀ VictorianĀ Dorset.
Thomas HardyĀ OMĀ (2 June 1840 ā 11 January 1928) was an English novelist and poet. AĀ Victorian realistĀ in the tradition ofĀ George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry byĀ Romanticism, including the poetry ofĀ William Wordsworth. He was highly critical of much inĀ VictorianĀ society, especially on the declining status of rural people in Britain, such as those from his nativeĀ South West England.
While Hardy wrote poetry throughout his life and regarded himself primarily as a poet, his first collection was not published until 1898. Initially, he gained fame as the author of novels such asĀ Far from the Madding CrowdĀ (1874),Ā The Mayor of CasterbridgeĀ (1886),Ā Tess of the d’UrbervillesĀ (1891), andĀ Jude the ObscureĀ (1895). During his lifetime, Hardy’s poetry was acclaimed by younger poets (particularly theĀ Georgians) who viewed him as a mentor. After his death his poems were lauded byĀ Ezra Pound,Ā W. H. AudenĀ andĀ Philip Larkin.
Many of his novels concern tragic characters struggling against their passions and social circumstances, and they are often set in the semi-fictional region ofĀ Wessex; initially based on the medieval Anglo-Saxon kingdom,Ā Hardy’s WessexĀ eventually came to include the counties of Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset, Devon, Hampshire and much of Berkshire, in southwest and south central England. Two of his novels,Ā Tess of the d’UrbervillesĀ andĀ Far from the Madding Crowd, were listed in the top 50 on theĀ BBC’s surveyĀ The Big Read.
