‘TWO DEGREES WEST encapsulates much of the best of Englishness; not only in the countryside and the people Crane meets, but in the very nature of his journey – maverick, inspired, crazed and wonderfully humane’ – Mail on Sunday.
In an attempt to discover what that elusive concept, ‘being English’, means, Crane decided to become a stranger in his own land. Avoiding the well-worn tourist spots, he journeyed the entire length of the country along a straight line, from the windswept North Sea coast down to the edge of the English Channel. The land and people selected at random by this cross-section give a uniquely fascinating and highly amusing insight into English life.
Reviews:
An enjoyable read , bringing back a pre digital Britain. The walk and characters draw you in, and you find yourself unable to put the book down as you want to find out what is around the next corner. Ironic as the book is essentially about a journey in a straight line ! For younger readers approach this as if every cell tower in the country and GPS satellite has disappeared.
I bought this book on the back of watching the author mainly on the Coast series but also the series Map Man which he presented. It is obvious without reading his C.V. that his subject is geography and maps. I had not read any of his travel books before, but I was thoroughly entertained by this one. If, like me, you enjoy travel books then you will enjoy this. He sets out to walk a line down through England from North to South, straying no more than 1000 metres on each side of this line. The people and places that he encounters are lovingly described with great humour and provide a good snapshot of the state of this country at the time he did it. Once I started I could not put it down!!!
