Johnny Hubbard was a tricky little winger and a huge Rangers star, one of the last surviving members of the great 50s side. Known as ‘The Penalty King’ in recognition of his record 65 goals from 68 spot kicks, one of his goals was described by Sir Alex Ferguson as ‘easily the best I’ve ever seen!’ Aged just 18 he swapped the sunshine of Pretoria for the grey streets of Glasgow, leaving behind the flames of apartheid for a land where another chasm ran deep through society – religious bigotry. Hubbard’s story provides an insight into life through a golden era in Rangers’ history, and he also recalls his time with Bury when he was almost drawn into the world of match-fixing. When Johnny gave up the game in 1964, he turned to community service and was rewarded for his good work with an Honorary MBE.

Reviews:

  • “Rangers penalty king Johnny Hubbard plays the game of his life with top memoirs in a new book. Hubby has committed his memories to print for the launch of a special book which takes fans through his remarkable journey from South Africa to Ibrox and, ultimately, Somerset Park. He’s 84 and is revered as the penalty king of Scottish football. Johnny Hubbard’s 65 goals from 68 spot kicks will never be beaten. But now the Rangers legend, who lives in Prestwick, has scored another dazzling goal by publishing his autobiography. The Penalty King, penned by Ibrox historian David Mason, hits the shelves this week and is a fascinating read.” –Daily Record

  • “Rangers’ star Johnny Hubbard’s journey from Pretoria to the great Ibrox sides of the 1950s is told with club historian David Mason in The Penalty King. So-called for his record of 60 goals in 63 kick, he gave up the game in 1964 after a glittering career. He was subsequently awarded an MBE for his multi-sport coaching classes and still attends Ibrox on match day. Will undoubtedly arouse great interest.” –Scottish Football Historical Archive

  • “Ibrox was the setting on Tuesday as the current master of the spot-kick at Rangers met the true Penalty King. As Johnny Hubbard, who scored 60 out of 63 attempts in the 1950s, was introduced to Martyn Waghorn – who has seven conversions from seven this season – the 84-year-old was quick to pass on the secret of his success. ‘I’ve given him some advice,’ winked the South African, whose opening goal in a hat-trick against Celtic at Ibrox on New Year’s Day 1955 is described in the foreword to his new autobiography ‘The Penalty King’ as ‘the best goal I’ve ever seen’ by Sir Alex Ferguson. I told Martyn if you’re good at something you don’t need advice from anybody. I never practised penalties in my life! If I had been bad at them maybe I would have.'” –Scottish Daily Mail

  • “Here’s How It’s Done Wags! Johnny Still Penalty King.” –Scottish Sun

  • “Penalty King’s got one over me, I need to practice mine all the time. Waghorn admits he’s put in the shade compared with Ibrox legend Johnny’s incredible heroics.” –Daily Record

  • “Tells the tale of one of the last surviving members of the legendary side managed by Bill Struth in the 1950s.” –Evening Times

  • The Author, David Mason is the author of Mr Struth: The Boss, Rangers: The Managers and A Match to Remember. A professional geologist, David has been the Official Club Historian at Ibrox Stadium since 1986, and is one of the most authoritative voices on the history of the club. He has written for various football publications and has appeared on TV and radio.
