The Other Barack: The Bold and Reckless Life of President Obama’s Father is a biography written by Sally H. Jacobs, a Boston Globe journalist. The book states that Barack Obama, Sr and Ann Dunham considered giving Barack Obama up for adoption to the Salvation Army.
President Barack Obama gave a blurry outline of his unusual parentage in Dreams from My Father, his memoir of his early life. That book — the only memoir written by a future or past US president of recent times that is remotely worth reading — was necessarily impressionistic. It was based on stories told to him by family members, for the “other” Barack was a negligent and drunken father who abandoned his son and three of his four wives.
A full biography of a presidential parent may seem excessive except for White House obsessives, but Sally Jacobs’s portrait is interesting in itself, and revealing about how the Kenyan colonial experience shaped the political outlook of his son today.
