Before Hockney, there was the East Yorkshire Federation of Women’s Institutes. If you are considering roaming the Wolds, this is a thorough guide to the territory now being displayed in the Royal Academy (Feb 2012). Written from the idiosyncratic viewpoint of those who live in the villages, there is plenty of history, some controversy and a great deal of affection. Illustrated with occasional line drawings, there is a plan showing the historical outline of The East Riding of Yorkshire, but no detailed map. That’s what the Ordinance Survey is for.
