I was just having a look at this book for a little research when I realized I had passed the first chapters. It is one of those books you cannot handle back because you feel you cannot live longer without knowing what other discoveries they made. It is related through the work of two archaeologists, Schliemann and Evans, with biographical passages added to numerous fascinating anecdotes. We really feel the same excitement they first experienced, and the most amazing is the evidence it brings to The Iliad and The Odyssey, as they make discoveries (whose pictures are in) in relation to Troy, Mycenae, the civilization and all the Kings and Heroes of the legendary Trojan War! The author demonstrates many relations with the descriptions in Homer and sometimes provides ingenious speculations, but keeps the book historically reliable. The only undermining factor to me is that we sometimes get lost in references of dates and names, but on the whole it is largely written so that even people ignoring Homer and ancient Greece understand it completely. Leonard Cottrell is a reference in matters of archaeological discoveries as he also wrote books about the Egyptian and other ancient civilizations. I deeply recommend this book to anyone having the slightest interest in Homer, archaeology or Greek antiquity!
