Fred Pitman started his own printing press in order to spread the good news of Pitman Shorthand, then known as ‘phonography.’ Fred’s father, Isaac Pitman, invented this system, which became the most popular system in the 19th century because its Semitic style vowel-optional system allowed for unprecedented speed in transcription. Pitman’s NT was first printed in 1848 with the title page in Pitman Phonography only.
