Review: I have to admit that when I first ordered this book I thought it would just be a bland historical tale like so many others, rolling off facts and figures previously covered in similar books. Wrong. It is probably one of the most exciting and demanding books I have ever read. The trials and tribulations that Sergeant Bourgogne suffered were simply incredible. His trek from Moscow with the remains of the Grand Armee to eventual capture, followed by his freedom and promotion was a tale of sheer human endurance. Whilst literally thousands were dying around him he managed by all means necessary to keep alive and follow the remains of Napoleon’s Army meeting and losing comrades he had known for years. Why this has never been the subject of a movie is beyond me. Perhaps that is for the best. Such a tale would be difficult to transfer onto the screen without diminishing its incredible impact. A truly wonderful book.
