A classic of colonialism in Africa: Amazed that this book is not more popular. Combining this level of insight and entertainment is a very rare feat. Written in 1939, Mister Johnson is the story of an educated young African in colonial Nigeria caught between native culture and the ways imposed by the British. The author is not only an expert on the life and peoples in the novel, having been a magistrate and executive officer in Nigeria, but also a brilliant novelist (most famous for The Horse’s Mouth). He was an interesting character, having an enlightened view of Africa for his time (although Chinua Achebe didn’t like Mister Johnson) as well as writing a novel about the difficulties of women, and declining a CBE.
Arthur Joyce Lunel Cary (7 December 1888 – 29 March 1957), known as Joyce Cary, was an Anglo-Irish novelist and colonial official. His most notable novels include Mister Johnson and The Horse’s Mouth.
