As with all Helen Waddell’s books this one is brilliant, she evokes a bygone age better than any other author I have ever come across with the possible exception of Geoffery Bibby (Four Thousand Years Ago). This book contains poems from Petronius Arbiter to the 13th century in both Latin and English translation. She doesn’t always try for exact word by word translations but rather to evoke the feeling and the imagery of the original.
