A good collectable edition.

Published to coincide with a major exhibition at the Imperial War Museum, this book tells the story of London’s experiences of war from 1939 to 1945. It describes the Phoney War, the blackouts, the first evacuations and the horrors of the Blitz, followed in the last days of the war by the terror of the doodlebugs, and recalls the spirit of defiance that united all sections of society against Hitler’s Luftwaffe.

Review: I was five years old when the second world war started living in SE London suburbs, so I saw and heard quite a lot of the ‘Londoner’s War’.

Mr. Zeigler obviously did a great deal of research and has managed to recreate the atmosphere of the war quite well. Unfortunately, not many of the average Londoners kept diaries and few wrote letters about the events so, with a few exceptions, he could only draw on (for want of a better term) the upper classes, plus back copies of newspapers and the official records. However, I certainly recognised the period and would certainly recommend the book to anyone who is interested in the civilian side of the war.
