While most of us are aware of the political history of WW2, seldom do we find a book dedicated to what life was actually like for the 90+% civilians not directly involved in the war. For every man or woman on the war front there was a mother, a father, siblings and relatives at home. This book is their story. Illustrated with actual photographs and anecdotes, it’s very much in league with Diary of a young girl or WW2 movies or any other art depicting real life. A life of perpetual shortage and uncertainty, fear of losing a loved one, or eveything! They were testing times and this book is a good account of what humans do during testing times.

A nicely put together book with interesting snippets of information provided by theme. The most interesting material was that which related to the Soviet Union and the Axis powers. More information here would have been welcome as this is rarely aired in the English language press.

As usual with these Reader’s Digest Books, they really just provide areas for further study. Worth reading for a quick overview of issues. Good photos.
