Written at a time when few people, let alone women, had access to Tibet, Alexandra David-Neel lived in the country for many years studying Buddhism and discussing esoteric and religious subjects in particular with many Tibetans, both high and low born. The author offers a wide-ranging review of Tibetan mysticism, the various initiation ceremonies and daily spiritual exercises which Tibetans used to undertake before the Chinese invaded their country. An exposition of the teachings of Tibetan lamas and the understanding of Tibetan intellectuals at that time, also contribute to this historical and philosophical document, as well as a glimpse of a remarkable woman traveller.

Reviews:

  • I have never read such a detailed explanation of anything as provided by A.D.N. based upon her own “on-the-job” observations and interviews. Considering the importance of religions in the world, this work of hers can only be classed as a Masterwork. It deals with the basics of the mentality through the cultural background of Tibet onto the wisdom that can be obtained. Although written in the 1920’s it is as relevant today as it was then, truth does not age, even though Tibet is now an occupied state. If you are one of those seeking to expand their knowledge base regarding Tibetan Buddhism, or if you are a historian seeking to find what the Chinese destroyed in Tibet, this book has to be a must.

  • More technical instruction than “Magic and Mystery” – read that first and then read this far more slowly and thoughtfully. Mme David-Neel continues to be a rich and deep resource on this subject, an authentic treasure. Buy it and treat it with respect, as Tibetans treat their mystical texts – it deserves it!

  • A deep examination of Tibetan spiritual practices, made even more astonishing by the fact that she was the only woman ever allowed to study the same at the time.

Alexandra David-Néel (born Louise Eugénie Alexandrine Marie David; 24 October 1868 – 8 September 1969) was a Belgian–French explorer, spiritualist, Buddhist, anarchist, opera singer, and writer. She is most known for her 1924 visit to Lhasa, Tibet, when it was forbidden to foreigners. David-Néel wrote over 30 books about Eastern religion, philosophy, and her travels, including Magic and Mystery in Tibet, which was published in 1929. Her teachings influenced the beat writers Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, the popularisers of Eastern philosophy Alan Watts and Ram Dass, and the esotericist Benjamin Creme.
