In this collection of convictions, opinions and moral dilemmas, Frank Topping takes us from Oliver Cromwell to Martin Luther King, from Socrates to Shakespeare, from Dickens to Gandhi.
Frank Topping (born 30th March 1937 in Birkenhead) appeared on Coronation Street as the Vicar of All Saints Church who officiated at the marriage of Ken Barlow and Deirdre Langton in July 1981.
A Methodist minister, he is perhaps better known for his “Pause For Thought” slots on Terry Wogan’s BBC Radio 2 breakfast show. His TV work includes his own series’ Topping on Sunday and Sunday Best. He and his wife established their own theatre production company which toured the UK from time to time.
Before being ordained to the Methodist ministry in 1970, Frank Topping worked in the theatre and television, both as a producer and a performer. He then worked for BBC Radio Bristol before moving to BBC London in 1974. He is known not only through his radio broadcasts but also because of his West End partnership with Donald Swan in ‘Swann and Topping’ and his television series ‘Topping on Sunday’.
His autobiography Laughing In My Sleep was published in 1993. In 1999 and 2000, he did voice work on Focus on the Family Radio Theatre’s Chronicles of Narnia series, playing the witch’s dwarf in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1999) and Nikabrik in Prince Caspian (2000).
