Fast becoming a scarce book

Hadrian’s Wall is the largest, most spectacular historical monument in Britain. Nothing else approaches its vast scale: a land wall running 73 miles from east to west and a sea wall stretching at least 26 miles down the Cumbrian coast.

Some of its forts are as large as Britain’s most formidable medieval castles, and with its mile towers, barracks and soldier’s leisure facilities, the site allows an astonishingly rich insight into Roman frontier life. Hadrian’s Wall Manual looks at the design and construction of the wall, from the initial land survey to its busiest period as Rome’s most northern frontier.

Review: This book is the third I’ve acquired in the Haynes series. Like the other two, this book is of a very high quality. It’s very informative with a comprehensive coverage of every aspect of the Wall, including a section on the Roman Army with great photographs of uniforms, weapons etc. The book also have photographs of views of the Wall, its forts and gate houses and each particular fort, showing artifacts found there. There’s also some great illustrations of what it would have looked like in Roman times. I have no reservations in recommending this book to anyone interested in Roman or British history. An excellent and attractive book.
