Given that I lost an uncle who was savagely machined gunned by a U-boat after he was torpedoed, this excellent book is not for my taste – Martin Frost

Formed in 1935, First U-Boat Flotilla operated against Hitler’s enemies from the very earliest stage of the war through to September 1944 when disbanded amid the flames of Brest during the US siege. Over seventy-five per cent of operational U-boats were lost as the Allies countermeasures and code-breaking successes took ever greater effect. This fascinating work records the Flotillas successes and disasters in detail.

Reviews:

Great book, easy chronological day by day read based on the logs, journals, dairies etc, well and factually sourced. Certainly not dry imho, but i understand that some people might prefer something more generalist and less detailed.

Definitely a must have if you have an interest in the subject and most certainly one of the best books on U-boats.

Note that that there is a second volume, on, well, the 2nd U-boat flotilla.
