THE SUNDAY TIMES #1 BESTSELLER
‘Makes Prince Harry’s Spare look positively restrained’ SUNDAY TIMES
‘A jaw-dropping account of arrogance, financial incontinence, greed and, indeed, entitlement‘ DAILY EXPRESS
‘This searing biography of Prince Andrew crackles with scandals’ BBC NEWS
The first joint biography of the Duke and Duchess of York and the first full biography of either of them, by renowned royal biographer and literary agent, Andrew Lownie.
Drawing on four years of research, numerous FOI requests and interviews with over a hundred people who have never spoken before, the book traces the lives of the late Queen’s second son and his ex-wife through their childhoods, courtship, marriage, divorce, careers, and royal and charitable activities.
Still living in the same house, they claim to be “the happiest divorced couple in the world”. The book investigates the reality of their relationship and their love lives. It charts Andrew’s record in the Falklands, his business activities and reveals details of how the couple have been able financially to sustain their extravagant lifestyles. It also recounts the full story of the Yorks’ links with Jeffrey Epstein.
Chronicling their lives in parallel, the picture that emerges is of a spoilt prince unable to connect and a duchess pushed by her insecurities into a desperate need to maintain the attention her ‘royal’ status brought. Rigorously researched and packed full of revelations, this is eye-watering biography at its best.
‘This isn’t just a royal biography. It’s a study in reputational collapse and the danger of unchecked power inside Britain’s most protected institution’ THE STANDARD
Andrew Lownie’s book ‘Entitled’ was a No.1 Sunday Times bestseller w/c 2025-08-18.
Reviews:
- Andrew Lownie has once again proved himself to be one of the most fearless and meticulous royal biographers of our time. Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York is a searing, unflinching portrait of Prince Andrew that grips from the very first page. Lownie’s research is formidable – four years, hundreds of interviews, and an extraordinary level of detail that goes far beyond the familiar headlines. This is no simple catalogue of scandals. While it exposes Andrew’s arrogance, poor judgement, and disastrous connections – not least with Jeffrey Epstein – it also captures the contradictions of a man both privileged and insecure, courageous in war yet reckless in private life. The anecdotes range from jaw-dropping to darkly comic, painting a portrait of a figure who has become a liability to the monarchy. What makes the book exceptional is its balance: it neither sensationalises nor softens. Instead, it presents a forensic account that is as readable as a thriller yet underpinned by scholarship and authority. Like Lownie’s earlier works on the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, this book will shape reputations for generations. For anyone interested in the Royal Family, contemporary scandals, or the psychology of entitlement, Entitled is essential reading. It is hard to imagine a more definitive biography of Prince Andrew – or a book more likely to seal his fate.
- This book is an amazing in-depth investigation into the lives of Sarah and Andrew; a non-stop spree of appalling and obscene spending on luxuries of every imaginable description, including parties that cost the price of a small house. This has to be the biggest soap opera ever. It certainly tops any television fictional series. There are affairs, deaths and arguments on every page. Some of the revelations are most definitely eye popping and never before revealed, including something about Prince Philip early on in the book (no spoiler here). Also things about Epstein and Trump that I didn’t know before. The facts about these people are not a comfortable read. Money, often public money unfortunately, brings corruption and vulgarity. There are also many laugh out loud moments, particularly about Sarah’s money making schemes. The amount of research this has taken the author is staggering. If you want a quick tabloid read this is not for you. If you’re able to concentrate on a larger book there is much to be learnt. The king will not be happy, but does my heart bleed? No. I found it totally engrossing.
- Not so much a biography but a chronicle of the lives of a tedious pair, who don’t seem to have a brain cell between them. It has a tabloid quality to it. Not much analysis or great detail about their characters or on the events surrounding them. Rips Sarah Ferguson to shreds whereas I thought she was the more interesting of the two having more get up and go than he could muster in 10 lifetimes. If she’d had more discipline and sense she could have achieved a great deal. He’s portrayed as witless and easily manipulated which is true, but he doesn’t need whitewashing .. he seems to have enjoyed bedding young women and scrounging as a way of life. I think, with the possible exception of the late Queen, most of Royal Family seem to have countless affairs. In fact the one interesting fact is in the first line saying Prince Philip and Sarah’s mother, Susan Barantes, were lovers. We need warts and all on Prince Philip. Much more interesting
