A fantastic book.

Written by the pioneer of British armoured warfare, this is an accessible and comprehensive guide to the battles that changed the course of history, explaining both the events themselves and their historical importance.

Review: These volumes took 30 years to write, and each paragraph is evidence of vast reflection and original insight. Ironically the description of battles is comparatively cursory and fairly pedestrian. Where Fuller is without peer is in the quite astonishing analysis of the origins of wars and the evolution of warfare.

The trilogy does have its weakness though…… the very earliest conflicts are necessarily speculative given the lack of primary sources, as is much of his treatment of WWII where he has to depend on the politically adjusted ‘reputation-saving’ post war accounts of a few German generals at the time of writing (early ’50’s) and of course, before the evaluation of Ultra in the war’s outcome…… Naturally to get the full impact of Fuller’s almost incomparable wisdom, one has to avoid the sanitized Terraine abridgments and similar.

J. C. F. Fuller was an officer in the British Army during the First World War. During the inter-war years, he and Sir Basil Liddell Hart pioneered the development of British Armoured Warfare.
