A great overview enabling sound judgement

The cavalry, in its many guises worldwide, virtually shaped the cornerstone battles of world history. This vital role is examined in a volume which provides information on all wars and major battles from 1661 onwards in which the cavalry played a decisive role. The text includes details of various types of cavalry and troops, the countries who maintained a cavalry, the tactics, strategies and ploys used in conflicts, and an index of cavalry markings and the flags of various armies. The book is illustrated with full colour drawings of horses, cavalrymen and equipment, including weapons of each period, flags and other markings.

Reviews:

  • While historical pictures are used, many modern detailed illustrations are also included. The best part of the book is that it explains some of the situation and tactics of the various units. This would definitely help in understanding any military account from 1661 to 1865. While some terms are used, many are missing, for example, one illustration is for French grenadier rank insignia, but even the specific ranks are not given, let alone the terms to describe said insignia. The insignia are not described in the text. So this is not the best book for learning all of the cavalry related terms.

  • The History of Cavalry is a well written account of a by-gone era. With fabulous pictures of the uniforms and weaponry, it is a history buff’s delight. Accurate history and beautiful art–how much better can it get? Every library should own this great resource.
