Modern reviews:

  • It is a very interesting read if one lives in Yorkshire. It provides a snapshot of life in various parts of the region in mid-Victorian times, and includes anecdotes of the people White encountered in his travels. Of particular interest to me were the descriptions of industrial places, such as Keighley and Sheffield. Historians may find his impressions of the (then) new model village at Saltaire of interest. Literature fans will be entertained by his account of Haworth, which he visited while Charlotte Brontë’s father and husband were still in residence.Be aware that this book is very much a product of its era, which means that words and opinions are included which were acceptable at the time, but which today are considered offensive. Use of the n word is one such example.Overall however, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it.

  • This is the 19th century version of a tv travelogue and it’s really delightful. Mr. White handles the English language with aplomb and verve and is clearly well up to analyzing what he is seeing. His joie de vivre comes through on every page. To my delight I found that some of the pubs he recommends are still in business.
