  1. S. Crockett (William Shillinglaw Crockett, 1866–1945) was a prominent Scottish minister, author, and literary historian. Known as an authority on the life and works of Sir Walter Scott, he spent the majority of his career as the minister of Tweedsmuir in the Scottish Borders.

Crockett is best remembered for his definitive books exploring the landscapes and history of Scotland. His major works include:

  • The Scott Country (1902): An in-depth topographical and biographical exploration of Sir Walter Scott’s life and the regions of the Scottish Borders he lived in and wrote about.
  • Abbotsford (1905): A detailed history and description of Scott’s iconic Scottish Borders home.
  • Footsteps of Scott (1908): A book combining biography with rich descriptions of the physical terrains that inspired Scott’s literary masterpieces.
  • In the Border Country (1910): A historical and geographical appreciation of the unique landscapes and folklore spanning the England-Scotland border.

In addition to his narrative works, he edited the comprehensive multi-volume Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae, an extensive biographical and historical register of Church of Scotland ministers. Many of his classic historical texts are accessible for free digitally on Project Gutenberg.
