First edition. For conditions please view our photographs. In these highly erotic memoirs the most famous courtesan of the Second Empire tells her own very stimulating story. Cora Pearl describes in graphic detail the sexual desires of lovers famous and humble – from royalty to servants. She lived in an age dedicated to sensual pleasure…of all kinds. Now, at last, her private recollections are laid bare…very bare indeed…
Review: I am not in any way or form a nefarious reader of risque books, but having read a book about four courtesans lives in 1800’s France, I found this little memoir, ostensibly written by the lady in question to be available. Yes, it is graphic, but one would expect that from a courtesan anyway. No, it serves to help one understand what could and did happen in those days. It is a basic style of writing indeed, but it has an innocent charm about it which, when the lady’s background is understood, from her birth in England, her strange family history and, the subsequent life in Paris etc, we can work out her lack of educational expertise.
Maybe this has a certain naive writer’s license about it, but it makes an entertaining read nonetheless, at 186 pages, it explains a lot. I enjoyed it.
