Jane Tomlinson, a mother of three from Leeds, was first diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 26. Despite being given the all clear, in 2000 she learned that the disease had spread to her lungs and bones and there was nothing more the doctors could do. Faced with such devastating news, Jane did not give up. She decided to fight — the life sentence, the disease, and the expectations of living with cancer. Battling fierce pain to complete three London marathons, the Great North Run, and a 2,500 mile bicycle journey ‘From Rome to Home’, she has raised nearly £1 million for charity. THE LUXURY OF TIME is Jane’s story, told with her husband Mike. It is the story of a marriage, of two ordinary people made extraordinary by the courage with which they face their greatest challenge. They tell, in alternating chapters, what life has been like since 1990 when Jane was first diagnosed, how they coped separately and together, how they told their children, how they deal with the physical and emotional pain. With searing honesty and surprising humour, they write about their fears, hopes and ambitions for an uncertain future.

Review: In a very well written book, Jane and Mike Tomlinson manage to show how brave and inspirational an ordinary family can be. Although there is no doubt that Jane is an exceptionally courageous lady, she also makes it clear how hard this has been for them all. Both her’s and Mike’s honesty is refreshing, and at times painful. Unputdownable, and if you want some motivation to get on and do anything in life, read this book. It should do the trick.

Jane Emily Tomlinson, CBE (née Goward; 21 February 1964 – 3 September 2007) was an amateur English athlete who raised £1.85 million for charity by completing a series of athletic challenges, despite suffering from terminal cancer.

Having had treatment for breast cancer in 1991, at age 26, the disease returned in 2000 throughout her body. During the next six years, Tomlinson completed the London Marathon three times, the London Triathlon twice, the New York Marathon once and cycled across Europe and the United States. Tomlinson died in 2007, aged 43.
