In 1993 and 1994, the author armed himself with pictures of the former GWR and spent several months going to the same places and photographing what he found. The resultant book must have been a success, because in 2001 he did another exercise, mainly using locations not covered in the first book, to produce this sequel. He only used the same locations when there was good reason to do so – either to show further changes since the original volume or to show the scene from a different angle. In Merthyr, the change post-1993 is dramatic, with much of the old station site having been cleared and the space used as a car park, with the remaining small station also being redeveloped.

As in the first volume, the author concentrates primarily on locations where trains still run, whether or not the stations originally featured still exist, but there are also pictures of locations where trains no longer run. I haven’t checked too closely, but it seems that there are more of these than there were in the first volume. The most dramatic contrast is provided by Yelverton, where the author went deep into the undergrowth for his picture.
