This “companion” is (as usual for such) a dictionary of all things in and related to the works of these authors. Flipping through it, it appears to be pretty complete and accurate. The style is a bit old-fashioned, as is the author’s over-reverent attitude to “the canon;” any variations from the text or original production style (like an early 20th-Century staining by an “all-Negro” company) are damned as heresy. It is old (and smells old), and predates any societal concern with, or thoughts about, such currently-popular issues as diversity, “cultural appropriation,” gender, and race, but a trove of information if you’re interested in G&S, and if you’re willing to accept the conventions of the era in which it was written — just as readers fifty years from now will have to accept ours when they write reviews about works that seem timely today.
