Ian Hay (the pen-name of John Hay Beith) wrote this novel as he went through the experiences he described; the training and then early days on the Western Front of a highland battalion of Kitchener’s New Army, finishing with the Battle of Loos.

The fictionalisation is wafer-thin, and anyone with knowledge of the Great War will easily work out exactly which battalion is referred to, and will identify the locations in France. Written with wry wit, It should be read for its evocation of the mood of the time, and the stoic humour of the army in those days. Highly recommended.
