“”This book is important–and portentous–for if it is true that tragedy is dead, we face a vital cultural loss. . . . The book is bound to start controversy. . . . The very passion and insight with which he writes about the tragedies that have moved him prove that the vision still lives and that words can still enlighten and reveal.””-R.B. Sewall, New York Times Book Review

Review: In this long essay, he discusses, using a wealth of examples, the proposal that, although Mankind is aware of tragedy, as an art form or as a feature of art forms, tragedy is a distinctly western tradition and concept. In his final chapter, having gleaned his information and examples thoroughly and effectively, e.g. Brecht, Homer, Shakespeare, Ibsen, Beckett and so on, he re-tells some moving anecdotes told to him on a journey in Poland before stating how large his subject is and how short his journey so far.

An erudite polymath, his examination of tragedy and its place in the history of humankind and its art, is fascinating.
