The Readers Digest Complete Driver’s Atlas took me back 55 years, when the AA produced ‘The Book of the Road’. The pages were interleaved then, but essentially it is the same Format, and allows me to navigate ‘off Motorway’ as I did then. I am 75 years old now but still enjoy motoring, although the cost of Petrol is now a little more expensive than when I used to put 5 Gallons a week in my Phase 2 Standard Vanguard for £1.00! The cars are very different now, too. The Vanguard did about 20 Miles to 1 Gallon, driven carefully, whereas my Ford Fiesta 1.6 does about 45 mpg also driven carefully. The Fiesta is infinitely faster than the Vanguard, even though the Vanguard was 2.1 Litres. It was, of course, a genuine 6 seater, having a bench front seat and a 3 speed column gear change. Those were the days. I think, from memory, the Vanguard had something like 24 Grease nipples which needed greasing once every month. How things have changed!
