Reviews
I would thoroughly recommend The Body Effect to anyone who wants to make long term changes to their relationship with food to achieve and/or maintain a healthy weight. It is not for anyone looking for a quick fix diet plan.
For me, I read the book not so much to lose weight but to better understand how I could maintain a healthy weight without the relentless need to count calories and balance those against energy output. Essentially, I have been on a never-ending diet that relies on sheer willpower to maintain which is stressful and difficult. It has allowed me to move away from this ongoing battle trying to control my body but move to a position where I maintain it in a healthy balance and consequently enjoy food more.
What the author has done very successfully is help me understand how imbalances in my body can trigger cravings and a need to overeat. She does this in a non-judgemental way setting the scene in her Author’s Note that describes how difficult her own personal relationship with food was and how that led her into understanding that healthy eating does not need to be a struggle once you learn how to maintain a healthy body balance. The Body Effect does not provide quick fix solutions to weight loss, it is about understanding that you are an individual and helps you discover what you personally need to do to lose weight on a permanent basis. To achieve this the author must have undertaken many years of research investigating complex science that she has simplified into easy-to-understand ideas and solutions that everyone can tailor to their individual needs. All in all a thoroughly well researched guide on how to achieve and maintain a healthy weight by making better eating choices without the need to rely on willpower alone.
The Body Effect is so much more than a book about diets; its pages take the reader on a journey of self-discovery and actively encourages them to seriously consider their own personal relationship with food, from their formative years to the present. This book is designed for those who really desire to get to the root cause of why their body is blocking their weight loss and to ultimately bring it into balance. The author presents a way of eating that targets the imbalances in the body, through focused and careful analysis. The book shows a deep level of understanding of the subject, through research and working closely with clients. It is personalized and tailored to the individual, in a caring and compassionate way, with honesty, instilling best eating practices. I would certainly recommend this book to others.
I have read many books in this field out of personal interest and for health reasons and this is one of the best. It is well written and well structured with a balance of data and science backed information as well as personal stories and examples. I love that the author recommends the use of spices as a way to regulate the inner workings of the body as this is something we have been raised with in my family and the health effects are potent. The summaries at the end of each chapter are clear and help assimilate the learnings within. It’s a very interesting, readable book and a good reference title to keep for years to come to help you keep on track of your health and body weight.
