A rare personal account of a well lived life. A wonderful life and so much for us to learn!

Review: Having read a book on the brief WW2 action in France that led to the surrender at St Valery by the 51st Highland Division, I read of the martial provenance of this author, who as a young Colonel led the Lothian and Border Yeomanry, the armoured reconnaissance squadron of the Division.
I was purely interested in his military contributions, however the majority of the book covered his lifelong love of horse riding, and following his severe loss of sight caused by a friendly fire incident, a new interest in horticulture. The wartime chapters covered 30 pages, of which the majority was of his POW experiences, therefore the average mark was purely for lack of interest in the majority of the books subject matter; equestrian – of which I have no interest.

What did assist the scoring was the jaunty nature of his narrative, which although severely injured, did not seen to suppress his love of life and endless moral high ground over any non-British nation. He was particularly critical of both civilian and military French males and seemed to have it in for Hore-Belisha, the pre-war British Secretary of State for War.

The title of the book further threw me, for it could have been assumed to cover his military career, but probably was double-edged to capture the response to his grievous war wounds.
