As far as I’m concerned this is an excellent reference book generally, although some of the entries are very short. It’s nice to learn about some of my favourites (those who survived into the fifties), such as Saveen – who appeared on television quite regularly – and Norman Evans; it’s also unexpected to find people such as Tommy Steele included in the definition of ‘variety act’. It’s very much a book for the aficionado, however, and Hudd mentions in his autobiography that the sales were not too hot. If the subject interests you, you can’t really do without this book.
