This is a great book full of fascinating detail.

• The market of books on the Battle of Britain is large. Participating pilots, general summaries, hindsight opinions, and in the case of this book, unit histories. The 8 Squadrons featured heavily in the fighting within 11 Group, some I had heard of before, others I was reading of for the first time. There was a formula style adopted for every squadron, and this was the reason for the mark off, for it was quite repetitive and frankly boring, unless you were into minutiae detail on who shot down what. Noting that the RAF over-claimed roughly 1 in every 3, it was tiring to reinforce the line-shooting. Accordingly I skim read thro those aspects, and concentrated on the remainder which included little pieces of reflected history on the battle, tactics and the individuals involved. What would have been perfect for me, was if the author had condensed the book down into brief page summaries on the unique contributions of all the units involved (71), stripping out all the action reports detail, in which his insights were overwhelmed. I do however now possess a good reference source of BoB facts and statistics. The bibliography was not extensive, but a good source for further reading.

• Having read this book I can only say that it is definitely one to buy and read. For the information contained within will give the reader a small insight of what went on during the Battle of Britain. As the book is filled with seriously interesting information such as: dates and times, squadrons, pilots names, actions, victories and losses, locations, weather etc. It shows clearly how and why in the reading how easily our fighter pilots during dog fights could genuinely make claims for victories. This book offers magnificent reading. Obviously it’s impossible to do a minute by minute description of the Battle of Britain, but this book does our brave pilots during the Battle of Britain a lot of justice and recognition, as if it’s needed, in what they had to endure on a daily basis in our skies against daunting odds from the start.
