A very scarce three volume set of this educational and instructional work by Stephanie Felicite, in attractive tree-calf binding. The works are written in French By l’Auteur d’Adele et Theodore (Stephanie Felicite, comtesse de Genlis). Felicite, a noted writer and educator of Eighteenth Century France, was best known for her works Adele et Theodore (1782), Theatre d’education (1779-1782), as well as several historical novels and romances, particularly Mademoiselle de Clermont (1802). Well known in France during the late Eighteenth Century, and largely supportive of the French Revolution, she would fall out of favour with the Girondin political faction prominent at the time, leading to her exile to Switzerland and, subsequently, Berlin with her pupil Mademoiselle d’Orleans. Her husband, left behind, would shortly after face the guillotine. Her legacy remains a nonetheless enduring one, noted by the likes of Jane Austen, and appearing as a character in such works as Les Miserables and War and Peace. In decorative tree-calf binding with gilt detailing. Externally quite smart. Please view the enclosed photographs – on balance a good offering in well preserved original bindings.
