Reviews:

  • Another fantastic Palin travelogue, beautifully observed and written with the kind humour and lack of side that makes Michael Palin such an amiable traveller. It is clear that this was a particularly challenging journey for the team, even if this is somewhat understated in the book, and the picture created of the hardiness of the people who live at such high altitudes and in such harsh conditions is vivid. The chosen route shows the diversity of the landscape and people and ending the journey by following the great rivers to the Bay of Bengal allows a contrast to be drawn between Bangladesh and Bhutan for example. Even though the journey is nearly twenty years ago now, the political tensions encountered still exist and the book provides insight and understanding into these. And of course, it is all topped off with Basil Pao’s wonderful photographs.

  • Have read the book several times and it’s descriptive and light hearted but lacks supportive photography. Like so many travel documentary celebrities, their own image dominates and many key features described on the journey are not supported by photos. This tends to lead you to constantly Google to see what he is talking about rather than just enjoying the book.
