A much under rated book.

The author was predominately a staff officer, but there were small sections where he wrote of his own operational involvement in the fighting for Florence.

Review: There being some good bits, but too many impersonal operational report extracts. The author was slightly typical of a REMF, but a middle management version. It was amusing when he was critical of the operational management of Michael Lees (who’s backstory it was that brought me to this book) and his role in the Albinea raid, and yet was very critical of the involvement of HQ base back in Monopoli on his FOB. The chapters on the fight for Florence were quite interesting, as it involved reporting on city fighting, which is rare in an SOE account, for most action is usually out in the countryside. It was personal, and I felt he was actually doing some fighting from the front, than steering the unit from the rear. The sections before and after Florence, was quite vague, and were largely extracts from books by those others involved, or cold after action reports.
