BC: Archaeology of the Bible Lands should be read by everyone who reads the Bible. I’m amazed I watched Magnus Magnusson on Mastermind for years and never knew he wrote such a good book. He should have asked some general knowledge questions like “name the books I have written”. Magnus gives a balanced account of the various positions Archaeologists hold about the historicity of Bible stories. There is a maximalist view and a minimalist view. He outlines the history of archaeology in Bible Lands and how views have changed with each new discovery. He also outlines the history of scholarly thought on Biblical texts. He shows that the Bible stories were written decades or centuries after the events they talk about. He looks for external evidence to support Bible stories.
