Best and most heartbreaking book I have ever read, met a lovely old veteran in my local library in the early 1960s he was on the Somme and said he had written to John Harris because he could not understand how someone who had not even been born when ww1 took place could write such an accurate account of it, he got a letter back saying of all the praise he got from the book none was more welcome than that of the veterans who served in that war.
