Review: I’ve never read any other Meredith. When I was a student back in the ’70s “The Egoist” was quite fashionable, so he can’t have been all bad, even though fashion is the least useful criteria upon which to judge anything (and apparently George Gissing’s novel “New Grub Street” had as its villain – Jasper Milvain – a character modelled on Meredith). But it’d take a bribe of IMF proportions to make me risk reading anything else by someone capable of writing “The Tragic Comedians”, however great anything else of his is supposed to be.
