Harriette Emma Burch (1845–1894) was born in 1845 in Westminster, the daughter of cotton dyer George Burch and his wife Jane Burch. As a child, the family moved to Cheshunt where she lived the remainder of her life. In the 1880s, she began writing fiction for the Religious Tract Society and her sister Florence Edith Burch soon followed suit. Neither sister married and Harriette died in 1894.
