‘Umbulala’ is the story of an African leopard, from cubhood to finding a mate of his own. It was obviously written by an amateur and could use some serious editing – almost every time a character speaks, their words are followed by a string of unnecessary punctuation marks (e.g. “Where are you going????!!!!”). This comes across as childish and unprofessional. There were also factual errors that bothered me, such as hyenas being referred to as dogs and a leopard somehow managing to kill a full-grown male lion. The main character, Umbulala, is constantly over-hyped – he is basically implied to be the greatest leopard that ever lived and there’s nothing he can’t do. It’s rather tiresome repeatedly reading about how wonderful he is. If these issues were fixed, this might be a tale worth telling. As it stands, though, it’s just not well-written or researched enough to be a really good book.
