Dibley is a village in need of a new vicar and Geraldine Granger is that woman – ‘a babe with a bob and heaving bosoms’. Not quite what the villagers expected. Meet the parishioners with her and fall in love with Dibley – well, love might not be on the cards when you meet some of them, but you’ll be fond of them for sure. And, as well as the scripts, I look forward to reading Geraldine’s sermons (just how are the Spice Girls like Jesus?) cringe with disgust at Mrs C’s recipes and laugh at the jokes Alice doesn’t get. Curl up with some Curly Wurlies (or any chocolate) and don’t miss the tasteful behind-the-scenes coverage of Hugo and Alice’s wedding – a la Posh & Becks of course, how else?

Reviews:

The scripts for this successful series in which Dawn French plays the buxom Rev Geraldine Granger are presented appropriately in small format “prayer-book” style and supplemented by information about the village of Dibley, its history and present inhabitants. It’s a funny and original comedy idea and could have been fraught with problems in view of the controversy about the introduction of women priests. But Curtis seems to have negotiated that hurdle unscathed, as one would expect from an ace writer with Not the Nine O’Clock News, Mr Bean, Blackadder, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill to his credit. The book will be backed by a big marketing spend and publicity campaign, Dawn French and Emma Chambers (the dozy but desirable Alice) will be doing bookshop signings, and BBC1 is repeating the series in the run-up to Christmas.

The Author, Richard Curtis is the best-known comedy writer in Britain. Among other things, he co-wrote NOT THE NINE O’CLOCK NEWS, MR BEAN and BLACKADDER. He also wrote the scripts for the two most successful British films ever – FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL and NOTTING HILL.
